Ph.D. Assistantship

IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF DECENTRALIZED LAND TREATMENT SYSTEMS

University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand.

We are seeking for a motivated and energetic Ph.D. student to undertake research on engineered land treatment systems for on-site and decentralized wastewater management. The research will bring together knowledge on constructed wetlands, reactive filters / bioreactors, and soil application to develop integrated treatment systems capable of advanced treatment. The work aims to develop systems appropriate to the needs of small communities and rural facilities in New Zealand, in particular the needs and aspirations of Maori (indigenous peoples of New Zealand).

The University of Waikato and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) have available a 3-year Ph.D. fellowship for a student to examine approaches to improve the performance of decentralized land treatment systems. Preferred candidates will have strengths in at least one of the following disciplines: biogeochemistry, hydraulic properties, and/or integration of engineering processes. Candidates with an M.S. degree are preferred, but candidates with a B.S. degree are also acceptable.

Funding for the Ph.D. program includes research expenses, study fees and tuition, and a 3-year scholarship of $25,000 (NZD) per each year.
