GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, invites applications for an M.S. graduate research assistantship. The research will evaluate physical and biological processes affecting the fate, transport, transformation, losses, and storage of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) pulses induced in response to grazing stocking density and duration. The research will integrate landscape temporal and spatial patterns of nutrient return as imposed by grazing strategies, micro-scale nutrient decomposition/utilization processes, and biological and climate interaction. This research will build on a long-term grazing project conducted on UNL’s Barta Brothers Ranch and collaborating ranches in the eastern Sandhills.
The student will lead in study design and implementation of research, assist in related research projects, and will need to live at the Barta Brothers ranch part of the summer. Opportunities also will be provided to gain teaching experience in soil and rangeland ecology and management, participate in professional scientific societies, and travel to professional meetings.
Qualifications
Desired candidates will have demonstrated interest in soil science and rangeland ecology or related fields, high scholastic achievement, excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English), and ability to work independently but also effectively with a team. It is also necessary to have a B.S. with appropriate academic credentials. The qualifying degree must be completed before the graduate research assistantship’s start date.
Benefits
The selected candidate will receive an annual stipend of $22,461 ($1,871 per month). A tuition waiver of up to 12 credit hours per semester and 12 credit hours during summer sessions is provided. Students on assistantships are provided health insurance at a reduced rate.
