M.S. GRADUATE STUDENT POSITION
Project title
Nitrous Oxide Emissions, Nitrogen Use-Efficiency and Grain Productivity in Ferti-irrigated Croplands: Effects of Slow Release and Split Nitrogen Additions.
Project description
To quantify and reduce N2O emissions from agricultural, fertilized soils, are critical challenges for scientists, farm managers and the broader society. Irrigation may disproportionally increase the risk for higher emissions to occur, but increases in soil moisture could also increase both nutrient use-efficiency and grain productivity which in turn would counterbalance higher emissions when quantified in an intensity basis. Further, management practices such as slow release or split fertilization could result in enhanced environmental and agronomic performance. This project will address these questions via a multi-year field experimentation and attempt to identify balanced solutions.
Field activities will take place in sites planted to annual crops under common rotational systems in Alberta and using modern facilities and equipment. Work will involve instrumentation to quantify fluxes, soil and plant responses. Laboratory work will involve novel approaches to discern associated soil processes and properties. This can include incubation work. In addition to frequent interactions with University of Alberta staff, collaborative work will be also conducted with personnel from provincial and federal research agencies.
