TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY

College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Sciences
Dept. of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
M.S. Assistantship in Plant Science

Objective

Tennessee State University has a research assistantship available beginning in Fall 2015 in the area of Plant Science. Specific interests/experience includes bioenergy crop production, biochar, canola production, and/or industrial hemp production. Interest in Extension is a plus.

Project summary

Bioenergy is an important energy source to assist in maintaining U.S. energy and economic security. Bioenergy crop production focuses on the production of feedstocks that can be used for bioenergy products (co-firing, biofuels) and enhance rural economic development by providing alternative sources of revenue for farmers and diversification opportunities. There are a number of feedstocks under consideration for bioenergy and, therefore, there is much research to be accomplished to identify sustainable options. There is also a need to identify varieties and management practices for these feedstocks in Tennessee. Potential research projects available include the utilization of biochar with switchgrass production to identify sustainable management practices, and variety trials of canola or industrial hemp feedstocks to identify those that will perform best for Tennessee farmers.
