M.s. and Ph.D. Graduate Student Positions
We have three (3) projects in which we need to incorporate highly qualified students to conduct research. These projects are:
- Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Cropland receiving Manure. To decipher and reduce N2O emissions from soil is challenging. Manure additions can further increase the risk for such emission to occur. This project address these issues and attempt to find solutions by assessing times of manure addition and the use of nitrification inhibitors.
- Reclaiming Boreal Linear Corridors by Enhancing Soil Condition. I am seeking for a responsible student with interest in soil science and land reclamation.
- Soil and Root Responses to Control Traffic Management in Croplands. Control traffic is a farming system that establishes specific tramlines in croplands for the recurrent operation of agricultural machinery. This can be seen as a step beyond no-tillage management and as an improved practice towards precision agriculture.
For the first project we are seeking for a M.S. or Ph.D. student; for the other two, we are seeking for M.S. students. The selection process will run until positions are filled.
Candidates profile:
Selected students are suspected to have some knowledge of soils, nutrient cycling, and the roots system. They should be proactive and flexible, showing willingness to undertake scientific approaches and to engage data analyses and develop scientific writing skills. Other assets will be also considered during the selection process, which include: A teamwork aptitude, ability to work independently and with others, a desire to present results in public, a 3.5 GPA or better, and a valid driver license and clean driving record/abstract.
Planned activities:
Field activities will be in Alberta, in both cropping and forest areas. Work will involve instrumentation to quantify nutrient fluxes, soil sampling, and plant responses. Laboratory work will involve novel instrumentation to describe the physical basis and metrics of soil properties and root responses.
