Ph.D. and M.S. Assistantships

Job Details: Two Graduate Research Assistantships are available for a Ph.D. and a M.S. candidates starting in Spring 2015 or later at the University of Connecticut (http://greenhouse.uconn.edu/). The successful candidates will conduct applied research on various aspects of non-traditional water sources for irrigation in greenhouses (Ph.D. candidate), and in various aspects of control of waterborne pathogens in hydroponic systems (M.S. candidate). The Ph.D. student will advance knowledge on monitoring and management of water-quality using non-traditional water sources for irrigation of edible and ornamental crops in greenhouses; whereas the M.S. student will advance knowledge and management of mineral nutrition and biocontrol to prevent disease development of lettuce and herbs grown in hydroponic systems. These research will allow close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of horticulturists, engineers, economists, social scientists, Dr. Wade Elmer from The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (New Haven, CT), the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, multiple commercial greenhouse operations, and commercial growers (http://greenhouse.uconn.edu/water-energy-food-nexus/).
