Ph.D. Opportunities Evaluating Mountain Hydrology and Forestry Impacts

University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, Oregon State University
The Southern Rockies Watershed Project in the Rocky Mountains of south-west Alberta (http://www.srwp.ualberta.ca) is conducting research on the effects of natural and human-related disturbances on key watershed processes (hydrology, water quality / biogeochemistry, aquatic ecology, and others) that regulate water-associated ecological services in headwaters catchments and at larger, downstream river basins. A component of this research will involve evaluating comparative impacts of several differing types of forest harvesting disturbances on this broad range of water resources values.

Currently, we have graduate research opportunities (M.S. or Ph.D.) available for 2-3 excellent, highly motivated, student candidates interested in plot/hillslope/catchment field research on:

1. Erosional processes linking soil mobilization with sediment transport and fate in streams associated with forest harvesting activity including roads/linear disturbances in mountainous landscapes.

2. Effects of forest harvesting on evaporatranspiration and soil moisture dynamics in mountain forest environments.

Positions are available immediately (starging Sept. 2014 or Jan. 2015) and will remain open until filled. Successful candidates will conduct field based research as part of a large international, interdisciplinary team of water scientists. Graduate students will be located at University of Alberta, Dept. of Renewable Resources (http://rr.ualberta.ca), University of Waterloo, Dept. of Geography and Environmental Management (http://uwaterloo.ca/geography-environmental-management), , or Oregon State University, Dept. of Forest Engineering, Resources, & Management (http://ferm.forestry.oregonstate.edu). Graduate students working on these projects will be expected to employ varied methodological approaches including field-based research supported by laboratory, advanced statistics, and/or modeling tools to contribute to the development of watershed sciences.

Requirements

1. Application letter.
2. Resume or CV.
3. Transcripts of grades from all previous degrees.
4. Three letter of reference (recommendation) with contact information.
5. TOEF scores.
6. GRE scores are not mandatory, but highly recommended.

Previous undergraduate or M.S. degree in related environmental sciences and strong/previous field skills/experience are highly desired.

All application documents must be sent in English language to:
