Graduate Research Assistantship in Weed Science

MSU-Southern Agricultural Research Center, Huntley, MT.

The Southern Agricultural Research Center (SARC) near Huntley, Montana, is one of seven facilities that make up the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station Research Center System, College of Agriculture. The Research Center is a 462 acre facility located in the heart of the Huntley-Worden Irrigation Project, which resides along the Yellowstone River approximately 12 miles east of Billings, Montana. Major crops in this region include winter and spring wheat, malt and feed barley, oat, sugar beets, silage and field corn, dry beans and alfalfa.

Duties of the selected candidate:

  • The candidate will conduct applied field-oriented research on integrated strategies for weed control in irrigated/dryland cropping systems of south central Montana.
  • Investigate molecular/physiological mechanisms of herbicide resistance.
  • The student is expected to prepare a research proposal, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, write annual reports, and present findings at regional meetings.
  • Publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals is highly expected.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must hold a B.S. degree in a plant science discipline with a good academic record.
  • Excellent work ethic, team player, and proficiency in English language (written and oral).
  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong agronomic/weed science background.

Benefits:

The selected candidate will receive a competitive salary, tuition waiver, and funding for research. The project will start in the summer 2014, and applications will close when the appropriate candidate is selected.
