PhD Graduate Research Assistantship: Agronomy
Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences
University of Florida
Position Summary:
A Ph.D. level Graduate Research Assistantship is available to conduct research in soil, water, and crop management on row cropping systems pertinent to Florida’s panhandle and surrounding region. Economic pressures on Florida’s agriculture require new approaches to maintain economically viable agricultural production systems. This position will utilize a systems approach to enhance and evaluate the sustainability, profitability, and delivery of ecosystem services of traditional agriculture (row crops) and emerging cropping systems. Research will focus on innovative approaches in areas such as traditional row crops (peanut, cotton, corn, soybean), specialty and alternative crops for newly initiated and value added markets, bioenergy crops, precision agriculture, conservation tillage, efficient nutrient and water management in crop based systems, crop rotations, environmental issues, crop protection, C sequestration, and climate change. The successful candidate will utilize state-of-the-art techniques for soil, plant, and atmospheric analysis to generate information that will fill the gap in knowledge in cropping systems.
The main research will be conducted at the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) located near Pensacola, Florida, although there will be opportunities to conduct research at other Research and Education Centers in the state. Information about this Research Center can be found at: http://wfrec.ifas.ufl.edu/. The WFREC consists of 640 acres (260 ha) and is located about 12 miles (20 km) north of Milton near Jay, FL (Lat 30.776657°, Long -87.141633°). Here, research is conducted on cropping systems, weed science, golf and sports turf management, landscape and nursery management, forestry, and wildlife ecology.
